You've received grades and feedback from instsructors and coaches all semester. Now is your chance to dish it out! As the December Edition of the STARS Newsletter finds you, you will notice a Semester Evaluation included. Please complete this form and return it as soon as possible!

This information will be used to evaluate our current services and brainstorm improvements. Many of our events and activities are fueled by YOUR ideas.

Also, those who return their evaluations to us by Friday, December 9th will be placed in a drawing and elible for a prize drawing, with winners announced during finals week!

Although a handful of students have been taking courses throughout the summer, many are making their way back to campus for the first time since the spring semester. Welcome back! STARS is also working hard to meet our project capacity of 160 participants, welcoming into the program dozens of new students. Students can already be looking forward to our annual All STARS meeting, providing an orientation of our new and improved services for the 2011-12 academic year. There will be two opportunities to attend this mandatory meeting:

STARS will have another busy week - offering three events (workshop, cultural, campus visit) for students to participate in. For those of you still needing an event for the Grant Aid or Spring Trip requirements - be sure to sign up TODAY!

Thursday, April 14th STARS will welcome guest speaker, Michelle Haupt, as she delivers the workshop "Deciding on a Major" - through the KSU Presidential Lecture Series. The event will be in the CAVE from 12:15-1:15.

Friday, April 15th STARS will travel to the Topeka Civic Theatre to watch A Streetcar Named Desire. The trip is scheduled to leave at 3:30 from NCCC.

Saturday, April 16th participants will have the opportunity to check out KSU during its annual Open House event. Students will also be able to attend morning workshops designed specifically for transfer students. The trip will depart at 6 AM.

Thursday will be a busy day!

Don't forget, as a STARS participant you are able to enroll with priority before everyone else on campus! Enrollment for summer and fall semesters will begin this Tuesday, March 29th and continue up until classes begin. Who needs priority enrollment? EVERYONE! Especially if:

you are an athlete, and need to schedule around practices and games.

you are an employee, and need to schedule around work.

you prefer morning/evening classes.

you are approaching graduation, and need certain classes to graduate before they fill up!

you just want to get enrollment taken care of early!

Be sure to arrange a meeting with your STARS advisor to begin scheduling your classes today!

STARS prepares students for holiday gatherings, future interviews

Each year just before students break for the holidays, a STARS tradition is renewed. For four years now, students have been receiving a crash course in dining etiquette. Not only do students gain perspective on American formal dining rules, but cultures worldwide as well.

Tara Solomon, the Neosho County Extension Agent for K-State Research and Extension, delivers a message that students can begin applying at family gatherings over the holidays. She also helps students realize the importance of using proper etiquette in future business meetings or interviews that may take place over a meal.

Twenty-five students were on-hand Wednesday, December 8th to take away messages from Tara, ranging from whether or not it is appropriate to leave food on your plate to proper dinner conversation.

If you were not able to attend, please look ahead to next December as we keep our tradition alive! Thanks, Tara.

In preparation for the dreaded "Finals Week", STARS presented its annual Study Bucket workshop today, distributing tips and supplies to help students study smarter. Here are some highlights of what was covered:

You Are Not Alone!

STARS has changed the date of our upcoming annual Etiquette Dinner. The event was previously scheduled for December 2nd, but will now be held on Wednesday, December 8th from 5:30-7:00 in the Student Union Oak Room.

The guest speaker for the event will be Tara Solomon. Tara is the Neosho County Extension Agent with Kansas State University. She will be covering proper formal dining techniques and key cultural differences in etiquette.

Every spring STARS takes some of its most active and academically successful participants on a Year-End Cultural Trip. This opportunity has taken the project to New Orleans, Chicago, and Dallas in the past - and the Team is already looking forward to its 2011 destination.

However, we need YOUR help. Be sure to vote on the 11 possible destinations at the top of the page. After a couple months of voting (and taking suggestions) we will narrow the field down to 4 locations, to be decided in a bracket this spring!

Disability Awareness Activity to offer NCCC students perspective

On Tuesday, November 9th from 10:00-12:00 in the NCCC Student Union, Southeast Kansas Independent Living (SKIL) will offer students the opportunity to be in the shoes of someone with a disability. Students who participate will be paired up with a helper and the team given basic tasks to complete. The activity is presented to help give students perspective on the daily challenges disabled persons commonly experience.

Members of the STARS Team will also be on hand to take part in the activity. Administrative Assistant, Marcie Burk along with English/Reading Specialist, Grace Riebel, will join interested students in completing the tasks. STARS is a federally funded project which serves students with documented disabilities.

Students interested in taking part in the activity should contact Director, Bart Chaney (bchaney@neosho.edu, or 620.431.2820 EXT 207) ASAP. Participation in the activity will also count toward the service learning requirement for the STARS Grant Aid, and will be an excused absence for students who may miss class.

STARS early enrollment starts Friday, October 15

Yes, it's that time of year again. Even though you aren't halfway through your fall semester courses you can already begin to plan your Spring 2010 success. Starting Friday, October 15 STARS participants will have the opportunity to enroll in courses before anyone else on campus.

This can be a HUGE benefit, especially if you:

-are in athletics, and need to schedule around practices/games.
-are working a part-time or full-time job.
-have a family schedule to work around.
-can only take courses at certain times or on certain days.
-are close to graduating.

Courses are not yet available to search on Inside NC, but STARS Advisors can access course schedules from within their office.

Schedule a time to meet with them today and start piecing together your Spring Semester!

This weeks All STARS meetings to familiarize students with resources

Students who are participants in the STARS program, both new and returning, will need to attend one of the two All STARS meetings to be held this week.

The meetings, which can be attended at either 5:30-6:30 on Wednesday, September 8 or 12:00-1:00 on Thursday, September 9, will cover the wealth of services and resources that are available to students in the project, as well as upcoming events.

Also provided at the meeting will be opportunities to complete the Fall ISP, as well as applications for the fall Grant Aid.

Students who plan to attend can also enjoy refreshments as well as collect their STARS study bag and flash drive.

If you are unable to attend, please make arrangements to visit with a STARS Team member to catch up on important information and receive your STARS materials.

First workshops of the year will focus on math and English

STARS will be kicking off the 2010-11 workshop schedule with a focus on helping students enrolled in math and English courses.

On Thursday (9/2), Carol Shepard will be hosting a mini-workshop on calculator usage, designed to help familiarize students enrolled in math courses with the functions of the calculators they will be using. Students will also be able to check out scientific or graphing calculators from STARS for use in their classes this fall. The workshops will be available in the CAVE at 10 AM or 2 PM.

That same day, Grace Riebel will also be hosting a workshop on organizing papers, just in time to help before many of your first writing assignments may be due. Resources for writing papers and citing references will be available as well. The mini-workshop format will also be available in the CAVE at 10 AM or 2 PM.

Mandatory Tutor Training today, August 31st

If you are interested in adding "Peer Tutor" to your resume, be sure to attend one of the two mandatory Tutor Trainings offered today. The trainings will take place in the CAVE at either 12:00-1:00 or 5:30-6:30 and will cover responsibilities, salary, confidentiality issues, recordkeeping, and even scenario role-play to help you practice helpful techniques. Refreshments will be provided.

STARS tutors must have received either an A or B in a completed class and have a recommendation from an instructor. Pay starts at $8/hr and increases with experience.

If you have any questions, or are unable to make one of these times, be sure to visit with Grace Riebel or Carol Shepard in the CAVE. Another training will also be announced in October.

NCCC TRiO Student Support Services Project is Re-funded!

It’s August, you’re back in school, and STARS is back too! We are glad to see our returning STARS participants and all the new faces we are adding to the project!

It may seem like business as usual, but it is not… STARS has just received new funding from the US Department of Education for another five (5) years! We will still be providing the great services you are used to and rely on, but many will be new and improved. The Team has been working hard this summer to tweak the project to meet our new objectives and better serve you! We want you to be looking forward to our first big event this fall, the “ALL STARS” meeting September 8th (5:30 – 6:30) and 9th (12 -1). Plan ahead to be there and learn all about the new and improved services STARS now has to offer! We want to help you make this your best semester ever! So come to the CAVE to see us often. Fall semester begins August 23rd

Summer has blown by, and already we are facing the beginning of a new semester. First of all, welcome back to those of you who are returning! Just as a refresher, here are some things to keep in mind as you revisit campus:

1. YOU ARE STILL IN STARS! If you have already been accepted into STARS, you don't need to reapply. However, you DO need to visit with your STARS Advisor as soon as possible to fill out an updated Individual Student Plan (ISP). This will make you an active participant.

2. Don't forget to attend an All STARS meeting at the beginning of the semester to get caught up on what new/returning services will be offered and grab your new gear (study bag, flash drive, etc.).

3. Be sure to join us at the annual STARS Mixer in September to get acquainted with old friends and new faculty. Oh yeah, there are door prizes and refreshments too!

4. Check your mail for newsletters and messages about upcoming events and sign up the first of September. We have many new workshops and activities planned this year.

5. Just drop by...we're waiting to hear about your new classes and how your summer was, so check in with your STARS Advisor in between classes.

First Annual STARS Summer Success Mixer in the books!

On Thursday, July 23rd STARS held its first ever STARS Summer Success Mixer over the lunch hour. The event was hosted on the final day of summer courses, marking the end of yet another successful term for 8 of STARS' summer students.

The mixer, modeled after the Fall and Spring editions, had a summer twist with STARS, faculty, and staff from the CAVE supplying a homecooked BBQ. Along with good food and drink, students had the opportunity to converse and network with employees on campus in a relaxed setting to help celebrate their year's successes.

Thanks to all of those who were able to attend, and we look forward to next year's installment!

STARS recounts highlights of outstanding 2009-2010 year

The following article was printed in the May 2010 edition of "STARS Insight".

As STARS closes the book on yet another academic year, we take a moment to look back on some of the highlights of 2009-2010.

STARS kicked off the new year by reaching its capacity of 160 students by the first part of October, and was able to fill any spots opened by December graduates early in the Spring.
The Team also welcomed two new Staff members: Transfer/Career Advisor Kyle Bures, and English/Reading Specialist Grace Riebel.

We are also proud to announce that over 60 participants have filed their official “Intent to Graduate” for the May 2010 Commencement, with over 60 also qualifying for the annual Academic Banquet—honoring those who’ve achieved a 3.0 cumulative GPA or higher.

Looking back, STARS offered participants over 20 workshops, 8 cultural trips, 7 campus visits, 2 Faculty/Staff/Student Mixers, and various other supportive opportunities and services throughout the year.

As STARS peers ahead, we’ve already begun planning for next year’s schedule, increasing even further the number of workshops, services, and events available to students.

Thanks to students, faculty, and staff who have supported us and let us know your great ideas for future events so that we can include them in next year’s schedule.

Next week is the time for Finals Study Parties!! Come study with STARS for your Final Exams! We will offer a chance to study with professors, experienced peers, and fellow test-takers! Not to mention, refreshments will be provided to keep your brain functioning well! We can answer questions, help you through the confusing parts, and help you remember the key information. STARS return from Dallas...with photo proof!

STARS recently returned from our annual extended cultural trip, complete with photo highlights from the excursion to Dallas. Check out some of the highlights below, and if you attended the trip check with STARS about getting a CD complete with all of the photos taken from the trip.

Dallas Cowboys Stadium
So large that one photo could not encompass the entire stadium from the parking lot, the newly constructed Cowboy Stadium was an impressive architectural feat. It was the first official stop on the trip, complete with a guided tour of the facility. The stadium can seat up to 100,000.

Medieval Times
Next, STARS visited the Medieval Times. Here students are seen receiving their medieval fare from their designated "Wench" for the evening. The event included a meal and a medieval tournament complete with jousting and sword fighting.

UT - Arlington Campus Visit
The next day the group traveled to Arlington to visit the campus of UTA - a large urban campus enrolling over 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The visit included a tour, and presentations from admissions, financial aid, and student support services.

Dallas World Aquarium
Next stop: Dallas World Aquarium. Here students are seen at the entrance to the Aquarium as they embark on the maze that was the DWA. The aquarium featured a large number of exotic animals.

Improv Comedy Club

Texas Civil War Museum
The final visit of the trip was paid to the Texas Civil War Museum, which housed the exhibit seen here. The Museum included a large collection of weapons, uniforms, and dress from the time period. Also featured was a 30 minute video discussing Texas' involvement in the war.

STARS also visited the Dallas Museum of Art and the Sixth Floor Museum (tribute to JFK), but were unable to take photos of the exhibits. While visiting Dallas, the group also tasted the local fare, eating at Spaghetti Warehouse and Hardrock Cafe. For more pictures check with STARS!

Academic Banquet to honor dedicated students

The annual STARS Academic Banquet will be held this Thursday, April 22nd to recognize those students who have thrived and achieved. Participants who have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher were mailed formal invitations to the event last week.

The event, which will host keynote speaker Brian Inbody, Vice President of Student Learning, will be held in the Student Union Oak Room from 5:30-7:00. Dinner and refreshments will be provided.

Those who plan to attend should RSVP to a member of the STARS Staff as soon as possible so arrangements can be made.

So if you have been invited, please join us in celebrating both you and your peers achievements thus far! Thank you for your dedication, and hope to see you there!

STARS adds Financial Literacy Workshop

Tuesday, April 6th STARS will be holding another Financial Literacy Workshop for participants to attend. Linda Jones will be presenting from 12:00 - 1:00 in the CAVE and from 5:30-6:30 in Stoltz Lecture Hall.

This workshop WILL COUNT TOWARD SATISFYING YOUR FINANCIAL LITERACY REQUIREMENT NEEDED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE ADDITIONAL STARS GRANT AID.

Tara Solomon to give STARS Nutrition Workshop

On Wednesday, March 10th, Tara Solomon will be on hand to present the STARS Nutrition Workshop. The event will be held in the CAVE over the lunch hour, a fitting time to discuss the ins and outs about proper nutrition and healthy living.

Tara is the Neosho County Extension Agent for the KSU Research and Extension Office, and has previously hosted the STARS Etiquette Workshop.

If you are interested, please sign up in the CAVE today. Remember this event will count toward remaining an "active" participant in the STARS program, as well as fulfilling an event toward completing your Grant Aid requirements.

STARS announces Dallas as Spring Trip destination

The votes are in, and STARS is headed to the "Big D", Dallas, Texas for its annual Spring Trip. Staff and event planners are working to put together an official itinerary for the trip, but STARS is hoping to squeeze in a visit to The Sixth Floor Museum (dedicated to John F. Kennedy), a guided tour of the new Dallas football stadium, as well as a campus visit. Other details are still being worked out.

If you have any ideas or suggestions on where to visit - please leave comments to let us know - we'll try and fit them in!

But not so fast...STARS will also be setting requirements in order to be eligible for the trip. This will require students to have a Cumulative GPA of 2.0 with a C or above in all spring term courses and at least a 2.5 term GPA as of April 9. Eligible students will also need to have attended at least one financial aid/literacy workshop, as well as one other workshop or event.

So, please work to get your eligibility status where it needs to be to attend and be on the lookout for sign-ups to be posted soon!

Transfer Workshop hosts good turnout

A group of twenty-one students were on hand to take in a guest presentation from Julie Katz, Transfer Representative and Assistant Director of Admissions at Kansas State University on Thursday.

Katz presented "Finding the Right Fit", speaking on the importance of finding the college or university that fits your interests and needs. Also covered was the necessity of finding out key details and deadlines for each school you are interested in pursuing, including financial aid and admissions applications. Katz also fielded questions about residency status and scholarships as well. In addition to general information to keep in mind for transferring to all schools, Katz also highlighted some of the benefits of a KSU education as well.

Also presented at the workshop were multiple handouts containing a KSU Transfer Student checklist, key scholarship information, as well as a listing of all post-secondary institutions in the state of Kansas. For these and other admissions materials, please visit the transfer rack in the CAVE or schedule an appointment with the Transfer/Career Advisor, Kyle Bures.

English and Math tutoring now available in Student Union

Grace Riebel and Carol Shepard will now be available for students needing tutoring for English/Reading and Math courses in the NCCC Student Union. Throughout the Spring 2010 semester Grace and Carol will be set up in the lobby to assist students on Monday's and Wednesday's from 1:00 - 2:30.

So just stop by after lunch at the cafeteria, but save some appetite to learn!

"Intent to Graduate" due for May graduates

Congratulations! You've worked hard in your courses to get this far, and it is now time to graduate. But don't let an important step fall through the cracks. Remember that you MUST turn in an "Intent to Graduate" form, have your advisor do a degree check, and print out an unofficial transcript. All of these items must be turned into the Business Office in Sanders Hall by February 15th!

Also, if you are within 9 hours of an Associate Degree by May graduation, you may also follow this process and walk in May! Your diploma will be issued when you complete your 9 hours.

So be sure to get this taken care of, your success is important to STARS. If you have already taken care of this important step, please still notify a member of the STARS Team so we can note it in our records.

Financial Aid Worskhops hosted by STARS

Kerrie Coomes will be supporting STARS by presenting two workshops this week to help students in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Kerrie brings to the table 5 years of experience working in financial aid.
She will cover the basics on how and when to apply, and what aid you may possibly receive in applying for FAFSA, as well as loans and scholarships that are available.

Grant Aid applications due Friday, February 5th

Remember that for those of you who are Pell eligible and interested in applying for additional STARS Grant Aid, those applications are DUE FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5th by 5:00 PM - NO EXCEPTIONS.

Once applications are received and reviewed, you will then receive a letter in the mail that will need to be signed/accepted/returned by the deadline listed in the letter. Please make sure your local or most recent address is on file with Marcie Burk.

In addition to being Pell eligible and applying, other requirements must be met in order to receive the additional Grant Aid:

1) Have a C (2.0) or better grade in ALL semester classes at mid term

2) Attend at least one Financial Literacy workshop

3) Attend at least two additional STARS workshops or events

4) Work with one Service Learning Project (approved volunteer work)

5) Meet with your STARS Advisor 2 times

Two chances to attend ALL STARS Meetings

Welcome Back! STARS is excited for the upcoming semester, and invites you to attend one of two scheduled ALL STARS Meetings. Students can attend TODAY, January 26th from 5:30 - 6:30, or January 27th from 12:00 - 1:00. Both meetings will be held in Stoltz Lecture Hall.

We will cover all of the services we provide, inform you of upcoming events, and give you information on how to receive additional Grant Aid. Students will also have the opportunity to complete their Individual Student Plan (ISP) and ask any questions they have. Don't forget this is when you receive your study bag for the semester! And...as always, food and refreshments will be provided!

Please come sign up in the CAVE if you haven't already. If you are unable to make one of these times, you must still meet with your STARS advisor to cover the PowerPoint, complete your ISP, and receive your study bag.

STARS welcomes new member of team!

STARS has filled the English/Reading Specialist position, and Grace Riebel has been named as the newest member of our team. Grace is still working on her Masters in English Literature from Pittsburg State University, but will be available to tutor and advise on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays throughout the course of the Spring 2010 semester. At that point she will then begin full time. Grace's office is located in the CAVE next to Carol Shepard - please stop by and introduce yourself and receive English/Reading help as soon as you get a chance!

USA Funds Life Skills offers modules in academic, career, and financial planning.

Neosho County Community College students can now register on USA Funds website to participate in a number of activities to help them plan for the future.

By logging on to http://lifeskills.usafunds.org/lp.aspx/001936-00/92_Y7O4 students can quickly create an account and participate in their choice of three test modules:

1. How Do I Establish Career Goals?

2. How Do I Prepare For A Job Interview?

3. What Do I Need To Know Before I Select A Program of Study?

By logging on to http://lifeskills.usafunds.org/lp.aspx/001936-00/91_N1U5 students can access modules addressing financial literacy such as:

1. How Do I Apply For Financial Aid?

2. How Do I Budget While in School?

Modules address commonly asked questions on each topic, and some involve interactive games to give students a hands on approach to learning how to plan for the future. By taking advantage of these students can see first-hand examples of how to better prepare for the future while still in school.

STARS/CAVE Finals Snacks, December 15-17

To help curb your appetite and fuel your brain throughout finals, STARS and the CAVE will be providing finals snacks for all students on the Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of finals week.

Provided will be water, cereal bars, chex mix, cookies, powerade mix, muffins, fruit, etc. to snack on while you study in the CAVE.

Be sure to sign in if you take advantage of the finals snacks, and ask for any help that you may need in preparing for your finals!

Etiquette Dinner/Workshop a Success

STARS enjoyed yet another successful event with their annual Christmas Etiquette Dinner Thursday night, with 24 participants plus staff present to enjoy a formal steak dinner.

The workshop was held at the Tioga Suites on Main Street downtown.

Tara Solomon, County Extension Agent, was on hand to discuss the importance of proper dining etiquette in a formal setting, covering the do's and do not's of how to eat and converse throughout a formal meal or job interview. Participants also learned how etiquette varies internationally.

Overall, it was a great opportunity for students to practice proper dining technique in a comfortable atmosphere allowing them to ask questions of Tara and learn tips to help them in future settings that may prove critical in landing the "dream job" or making a memorable first impression.

K-STATE FACULTY MEMBER TO SPEAK AT NEOSHO COUNTY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Dr. Emily Lehning, Assistant Vice President for Student Life and Director of New Student Services at Kansas State University, will speak to students at Neosho County Community College as part of K-State's Presidential Lecture Series.

Dr. Lehning will discuss "Finding the Right Fit" at 12:00pm on Thursday, February 25, 2010.

Launched in 1986 by K-State President Jon Wefald, the Presidential Lecture Series is a service offered by K-State at no charge to high schools and community colleges. The series features many of K-State's top faculty members, who share their expertise on a wide variety of issues. Kansas State University is a comprehensive, research, land-grant institution first serving students and the people of Kansas, and also the nation and the world.

STARS Christmas Etiquette Dinner this Thursday

This Thursday Tara Solomon will host a Christmas Dinner workshop over the topic of dining etiquette. Brush up on your manners just before the holidays and attend from 5:30 - 6:30 at the Tioga on Main Street.

All attendants must be passing ALL classes in order to be eligible for this workshop.

This workshop will count toward you Grant Aid requirement, as well as toward remaining an active member in STARS. Remember that participants must attend/utilize at least two services from STARS each semester and keep their ISP current each semester.

disABLEDperson Inc. creating opportunities for individuals and veterans with disabilities

The U.S. Government "Website of the Week" distinction was given to http://www.disabledperson.com/ just over a month ago for the possibilities it is creating to help individuals with disabilities with employment.

The website is a completely free service for individuals to post resumes and conduct job searches. They also work hard in conjuction with recruiting agencies to amass an amazing number of job postings each day to help lower unemployment rates among the disabled community.

STARS Staff to present Study Bucket Workshop

This Thursday, December 3rd join STARS as we will be presenting a "study bucket" workshop from 12:00 - 1:00 pm in the CAVE. Not only will we be discussing tips to help you study smarter as finals approach, but we will also provide a "bucket" full of tools to help you implement the tips we provide (highlighters, notebooks, etc.).

Sign up sheets are now available in the CAVE. Please sign up as soon as possible if you are interested so that we can get an accurate count of how many supplies and how much food we need to provide.

STARS participants visit American Jazz Museum, Arthur Bryant's

On November 14th, STARS traveled to downtown Kansas City to visit the American Jazz Museum.

To begin the cultural event, they took in world famous Arthur Bryant's BBQ located nearby.

The trip included listening to a live jazz performance and getting a tour of the museum. The museum also had an additional Buffalo Soldier exhibit and an opportunity to shop for souvenirs.

Semester Evaluations and ISP's, around the corner

Semester Evaluation
Yes, it's that time of year again. As the semester has flown by and is coming to a close, remember that Semester Evaluations are on their way. STARS will be mailing these out to you after Thanksgiving Break, asking you to complete them and return by December 11. These evaluations are used to ensure that we are providing the services necessary to help you succeed.

Individual Student Plan
Also, keep in mind that as part of your agreement to be an active participant in STARS you are required to fill out a new Individual Student Plan (ISP) at the beginning of each semester. Please come see Marcie, Bart, Carol, or Kyle to complete one of these prior to the Spring 2010 semester so that you may remain active in the program!

STARS Study Bucket Workshop: Study tips and tools provided to help you in preparation for the upcoming finals week. The workshop will be in the CAVE from 12 - 1 on December 3rd.

Christmas Etiquette Dinner: Brush up on your table manners as Tara Solomon presents a lesson in etiquette over an awesome meal. The dinner will be held from 5:30 - 6:30 at the Tioga downtown on December 10th.

STARS Finals Snacks: Available in the CAVE December 15-17. Be sure to drop by the CAVE for some brain food during finals week!
